Sign of the Times : Christmas Spirit in an Environmental Friendly Way

December 6, 2005

The following pictures are not your ordinary traditional Christmas decor that you can find in Department Stores. They are both products of the simple and yet creative mind of Filipinos.

Christmas Decor

The first one, was taken at a Petron Gasoline Station. Yes, those are empty oil container that were joined together to form a star (though a closer look would reveal that it was more of a propeller shape). The “star” was then outlined with Christmas light bulbs, which ironically consume electricity. But “star” looks good especially in pictures. I just hope that after the Christmas season is over, they would have thought of other ways to utilize the empty containers and not just put them away as trash.

Christmas treeThe second one is a Christmas tree made out of old plastic filing boxes. A colleague in the office was creative enough to combine several of those boxes to form a tree-like shape. He then decorated it with some of his toy displays as well as some other old Christmas paraphernalia that our office used during the past years. I must admit, I didn’t expect him to be that creative. And the Christmas tree, is an interesting sight to behold.

These two examples exhibits a way of spreading the spirit of Christmas through old ways without spending too much. This year could perhaps be one of “driest” Christmas for many Filipinos due the current economic conditions that we are having. But this should not hamper us from celebrating the season in a merry simple kind of way.
